Banbridge Chronicle, 26th January 2011 – Linda has high hopes for the future

Wee Wonders recently featured in the Banbridge Chronicle:

STARTING a business can be a complicated task, but with a great idea and a drive to succeed, that uphill climb does not have to be a struggle - as Banbridge mum-of-two Linda Buchanan is discovering.

With the support of Invest Northern Ireland's Go for it programme, Linda only recently set up 'Wee Wonders' - a company that provides baby and toddler activity classes, baby signing workshops and children's birthday party entertainment - and already she has high hopes for its future.

Inspired by her two young children, Eleni and Callia, former English and drama teacher Linda decided to set up the company after spotting a potentially large gap in the market.

"I always liked the thought of being my own boss and over the years came up with numerous business ideas that could work, but becoming a mum really forced me to bite the bullet," said Linda, who is also a qualified speech and drama teacher.

"After my first child was born I found there were very little structured activities in my area for parents to go to with their young children - and definitely not at weekends.

"I did my homework and quickly realised that there was definitely an opportunity to set up a company that would meet everyone's needs, including my own."

"Becoming a mother was my main motivation as I wanted to spend as much time with the girls as possible while they were young and also contribute financially to the household.

"Starting Wee Wonders enabled me to pick my working hours which I plan to extend as the children get older and I have more time to dedicate."

To put her plan into practice, Linda signed up for the Go for it programme, which provides support and advice for business start-ups and would-be entrepreneurs in the local area.

"The programme really gave me the push I needed to realise that I could take my idea to the next stage."

Looking to the future, Linda is keen to grow the business further, increase class numbers, and, one day, be in a position to offer the Wee Wonders franchise to other parents with a similar vision.

But for now, Linda is keen to enjoy her success.

"It's an adventure that's only just beginning and I'm really glad I'm on it."

The Go for it Programme is provided by Invest Northern Ireland and is part financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
